The friction clutch is a link between the engine and the rear axle and it is the power transmission itself. It is designed as a protection for the engine so that it can slip if there is a stop.

Installation of the Friction Coupling on the Rear Axle – Rotax Max DD2

It is very important that the screws are tightened to the correct torque to ensure proper function and maximum service life of the friction coupling. Tightening the screws too loosely or too tightly can cause slipping or damage to the coupling.

The friction coupling is equipped with four plastic bushings positioned between the friction coupling and the rear axle.

Installation Instructions

1. Install the clamp (#1), washer (#2), and friction coupling onto the rear axle, positioning it approximately in the center of the axle.
2. Carefully inspect the rear axle to ensure the mounting surface is clean and free from marks, burrs, or uneven surfaces where the friction coupling will be installed. The surface must be smooth and clean for proper operation.
3. Then slide the washer, clamp ring, and friction coupling toward the engine’s hollow shaft, which protrudes outward and has a large hexagonal nut-like shape.
4. Before tightening, make sure the nut on the backside is correctly seated in its hexagonal recess in the friction coupling.
5. Tighten the six Allen screws evenly using a torque wrench set to 8 Nm.
6. If a torque wrench is not available, an experienced mechanic may use a one-handed grip on a T-handle wrench and tighten the screws carefully to an appropriate level.
