The friction clutch is a link between the engine and the rear axle, and it is what transmits the power. It is designed as a protection for the engine so that it can slip if a stall occurs.

Fitting the friction clutch to the rear axle – Rotax Max DD2

It is very important that the screws are tightened to the correct torque for the friction clutch to work correctly and achieve the correct service life. Screws that are tightened too hard or too loosely can cause both slipping and damage to the clutch.

The friction clutch is equipped with four plastic bushings that sit between the friction clutch and the rear axle.

Fitting instructions

1. Thread the clamp (#1), the washer (#2) and the friction clutch onto the rear axle and position it roughly in the middle of the axle.
2. Carefully check that the rear axle is clean and free of marks, burrs or unevenness where the friction clutch is to sit. The surface must be flat and clean for the clutch to work correctly.
3. Then slide the washer, clamp ring and friction clutch towards the engine's hollow shaft, the one that protrudes and has a larger hexagonal, nut-like shape.
4. Before tightening, check that the nut on the back is correctly positioned in its hexagonal recess in the friction clutch.
5. Then tighten the six hex socket screws evenly with a torque wrench to 8 Nm.
6. If you don't have access to a torque wrench, an experienced mechanic can use a one-handed grip on a T-handle wrench and carefully tighten the screws to a ”reasonable” torque.

Important to keep in mind

• If the friction clutch is tightened too loosely, the engine may seem to slip when accelerating out of corners.
• If the clutch, on the other hand, is tightened too hard, there is a risk of damage or the components breaking.
• Always check that all parts are correctly fitted before using the kart.
