FIA-approved equipment is now mandatory in karting – here’s what it means

FIA-approved personal safety equipment is now mandatory in karting, both nationally and internationally. This change raises questions for many drivers and parents: what does FIA homologation mean, what equipment is required, and why has it been introduced?

What does FIA homologation mean?

FIA homologation means that the equipment has been tested and approved according to strict safety standards. Products are tested for:

  • fire resistance and heat protection
  • durability and wear resistance
  • impact protection
  • fit and performance during racing

How long is FIA homologation valid?

Homologation is valid for a limited period, usually 5–10 years depending on the product category. After expiry, the equipment is no longer permitted for competition use.

Mandatory FIA standards in karting

  • Race suits, gloves and shoes
    FIA Homologation 8877-2022
  • Rib protectors
    FIA Homologation 8870-2018

Who are FIA?

FIA is the international governing body of motorsport, responsible for regulations and safety standards from Formula 1 to karting.

How does this benefit me as a driver?

  • improved safety and protection
  • modern, tested materials
  • clearer technical inspections
  • equal safety standards for all competitors
