How to set the ignition on a Raket 95 engine

The Raket 95 kart engine is equipped with a Selettra analogue ignition system. This is not to be confused with other so-called digital ignition systems which are often programmable. The ignition system on the R95 cannot be changed by reprogramming It is very efficient, completely maintenance free and virtually indestructible. Actually, there is not much you can do about the ignition system, but here are some tips.

Setting up the Raket 95 ignition system

You should start by setting the pole shoe spacing, i.e. the distance between the flywheel and the ignition coil. You do this with a 0.40 mm non-magnetic blade gauge, which you press in between the flywheel's magnetic poles and the ignition system. It is important that you choose exactly the position where the magnet poles are opposite the ignition coil, otherwise it will not be right! Now we will check the ignition point. Insert an indicator bell (part number: 3544) into the spark plug hole. Turn the flywheel until you find the highest position of the piston, the so-called upper dead centre (ODC). Reset the indicator clock or note the OD value.

Place the tool on the flywheel as shown.

Then turn the flywheel clockwise, that is against the normal direction of rotation, and look at the indicator clock. It should move normally one revolution per millimetre.

Turn until the dial receives the ignition system on the left edge, this is now the ignition point.

In this position the ignition system should give a spark.

If the ignition point should be wrong, you will have to remove the flywheel with the flywheel puller (part number: 5051). Then you have to disassemble the flywheel spline which is in a groove in the crankshaft and thereby get the correct ignition point. You will need to practice several times before you get it right!

NOTE! The key is not needed to hold the flywheel in place, it's just there to make it easier to install the flywheel.
